ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: A great deal of attention of air pollution on respiratory health is increasing, particularly in relation to haze days. It is that exposure to cigarette smoke augments the toxicity of common air contaminants, thereby increasing the complexity of respiratory diseases. Although there are various mechanisms involved to respiratory diseases caused or worsen by cigarette smoking, in which the role of AQPs in the lung with regard to fluid homeostasis still remains elusive. In this paper, we copied the rat models based on smoke generator, and investigated the morphological changes of mucosa and related functions depending on the balance of lining liquid of alveoli via AQPs expression. Compared with normal group, weak labelling of AQP1 and AQP5 protein abundance were clearly detected in the corresponding part of smoke exposure groups compared with normal group. Hence, it is suggested that the contribution of AQPs in the lung is diminished, thereby causing perturbed balancing between resorptive and secretory fluid homeostasis under cigarette smoking.


Cada vez se presta más atención a la contaminación del aire en la salud respiratoria, particularmente, en relación con los días de neblina. En consecuencia la exposición al humo del cigarrillo aumenta la toxicidad de los contaminantes comunes del aire, lo que además aumenta la complejidad de las enfermedades respiratorias. Aunque existen varios mecanismos involucrados en las enfermedades respiratorias causadas o empeoradas por el tabaquismo, en las que el papel de las AQP en el pulmón respecto a la homeostasis de líquidos sigue siendo difícil de alcanzar. En este artículo, copiamos los modelos de rata basados en el generador de humo e investigamos los cambios morfológicos de la mucosa y las funciones relacionadas según el equilibrio del líquido de revestimiento de los alvéolos a través de la expresión de AQP. En comparación con el grupo normal, se detectó claramente un etiquetado débil de la abundancia de proteínas AQP1 y AQP5 en la parte correspondiente de los grupos de exposición al humo en comparación con el grupo control. Por lo tanto, se sugiere que la contribución de las AQP en el pulmón está disminuida, provocando así un equilibrio perturbado entre la homeostasis del líquido secretor y de reabsorción bajo el hábito de fumar cigarrillos.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cigarette smoking is a major public health challenge globally. It not only affects the general health but also impacts the oral health. It causes an array of oral health lesions including dental caries which causes pain and infection and can result in the requirement of the tooth to be extracted. The aim of the study is to investigate theAim: relationship of cigarette smoking and dental caries in the adult population in the city of Hyderabad. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted by OroGlee Solutions Private Limited, Hyderabad. A total of 1019 subjects aged 18 to 60 years were examined. Oral examination was done using intraoral camera, mouth mirror and torch. Results: Percentage of smokers having dental caries was 89.4% and percentage of non smokers having dental caries was 81.8%. Chi square test was used to determine the significance of difference between the prevalence of caries in smokers and prevalence of caries in non smokers. It showed a statistically significant correlation between dental caries and smoking cigarette. Smoking leads to multiple oral health problems including high incidence of dental caries. TheConclusion: incidence of dental caries further increases in presence of coexisting factors such as poor oral hygiene, food habits, limited preventive dental visits and old age.

Introduction@#The increasing incidence of stroke in young adults has been a growing concern, which is why research studies were generated to find out the risk factors contributing to the development of this disease. This study investigated the dose-dependent effect of smoking in the development of stroke in the young ages (19-45 years).@*Methods@#A case-control retrospective study was conducted using electronic and printed records of the patients admitted to Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center last 2017-2018. There were 275 patients included in the study. The smoking status and pack-years cigarette smoking of the subjects were recorded and were correlated with the duration of hospitalization and the Modified Rankin Scale (MRS). Results were analyzed using student’s t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson’s Correlation.@*Result@#The prevalence of stroke was higher in men than in women. The ORs (95% CI) of stroke were significant in current cigarette smoking at 2.71 (CI: 1.6398 to 4.4943). Compared with non-smokers and those who smoked 1 to 9 pack years, the OR of stroke was significantly increased for those who smoked 10 to 19, and ≥ 20 cigarettes per day with OR of 14.0765 (4.10 to 48.35), and 31.5854 (1.82 to 548.97), respectively (p= 0.032 for linear trends). There was a weak positive linear correlation between pack years of cigarette smoking (1-9, 10-19, >20 pack years) and days of hospitalization (r= 0.28; p for trend = 0.0168). There was also a strong positive linear correlation between stroke outcome using the Modified Rankin Scale and pack years of cigarette smoking (r = 0.72; P for trend = 0.001). This study shows an increase in the odds of stroke in current cigarette smokers with a dose-dependent relationship in its outcome.@*Conclusion@#Smoking is a significant risk factor for stroke with a dose-dependent effect on its outcome. Furthermore, quitting smoking significantly decreases the risk of developing stroke.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to explore the pathways that can influence cigarette smoking among adolescents. This population-based cohort followed a random sample of 12-year-old adolescents from southern Brazil for 6 years. Regular cigarette smoking was assessed through a self-reported question, previously used in the Brazilian National Survey of Scholar Health. We also gathered data on bullying, dental caries at baseline, incidence of caries, sex, friend network, and Sense of Coherence (SOC). Socioeconomic and demographic characteristics were also collected. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the pathways. Of the 1,134 adolescents examined at baseline, 768 were re-evaluated (67.7% retention rate). The prevalence of smoking was 37.6%. This prevalence was directly affected by low SOC (SC: -0.14, p < 0.01), low household income (SC: -0.12, p < 0.01), and male sex (SC: 0.15, p < 0.01). Presence of dental caries at baseline indirectly influenced the occurrence of dental bullying at follow-up via the incidence of dental caries (SC: 0.01, p < 0.05). Dental bullying indirectly influenced cigarettes consumption via SOC (SC: 0.62, p < 0.05). Friend network also indirectly influenced the consumption of cigarettes via SOC (SC: 0.32, p < 0.05). Psychosocial factors influence adolescent cigarette consumption through its higher direct and indirect effects (via bullying). In addition, behavioral, sociodemographic, and clinical factors also influence the occurrence of smoking.

ABSTRACT

Background. Healthcare workers (HCWs) can play a significant role in tobacco prevention by delivering smoking cessation (SC) interventions to patients who smoke. Objective: To identify and explore the perceived barriers which prevent healthcare workers from delivering SC counselling to patients in Zambezi region, Namibia. Methods: A regional-based, concurrent mixed-methods study was conducted between March and October 2020 among HCWs of the 8 constituencies of Zambezi region, Namibia. In the study, 129 respondents, who had been residents of the selected constituencies for over 5 years and aged between 17 to 60 years, participated. Results: 129 respondents participated in the study. Majority of respondents were females (62.9% and 68.1%) compared to (37.1% and 31.9%) males. The mean age of respondents was 35.91 (SD=9.3) and 36.61 (SD=8.7) respectively and their ages ranged between 18 and 59 years. Key barriers were identified: (i) HCWs based barriers included lack of time to provide SC, inadequate training and insufficient knowledge on SC interventions; (ii) system-based barriers identified lack of SC guidelines and educational materials for patients, and specialists to refer patients; and (iii) patient/client-based barriers included lack of patient interest in SC information, patients not adhering to advise given on SC. Conclusions: This study showed that SC delivery in Zambezi region is inadequate. Barriers were identified regarding the delivery of SC intervention for the first time. Targeted SC interventions are required to combat these identified specific barriers. There is a crucial need to improve HCWs skills and knowledge in providing SC intervention.

ABSTRACT

Cigarette smoking is a major public health issue in India and leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Addressing the issue of smoking is a major challenge to public health, as the addiction is hard to break. Counseling smokers regarding smoking cessation is the first step to achieving cessation, but the quit rates remain low. Several pharmacological interventions have been developed over the years. Nicotine replacement therapy is available in a variety of formulations, each with different advantages, drawbacks, acceptability among smokers and quit rates. In addition, a range of novel nicotine and tobacco products, including Heated Tobacco Products (HTPs), have been developed which leverage nicotine to aid in smoking cessation. A group of medical experts convened to review the evidence on the burden of smoking, the concept of Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR), novel nicotine and tobacco products for THR, and the potential of HTPs to aid in smoking cessation. This paper outlines the findings and recommendations regarding THR in the Indian context. The panel opined that tobacco cessation centers and counseling remain the foundation of tobacco cessation in India. At the same time, there appears to be potential for the application of THR products in India. The relevant authorities must review the potential of THR products, and make these available, to provide the best possible cessation strategy for the Indian population that is currently at risk of mortality and severe morbidity.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious public health concern in the twenty-?rst century, and its incidence, morbidity, and death rates have posed a challenge to the healthcare system. Cigarette smoking and occupational exposure are the two main causes of COPD. So, in this retrospective study, an attempt was made to compare the present prescribing pattern in a tertiary care facility in Nagapattinam to WHO prescribing indicators to check if the prescription pattern followed WHO standards. During the six Materials And Methods: months from April to September 2021, a retrospective study was conducted using case ?les from 80 subjects in the department of General Medicine. The following socio-demographic data, social history, comorbid conditions, route of administration, smoking history, and distribution of prescribed COPD treatments were collected. The age group of 61–70 years had the Results: highest proportion of patients (37.5%), followed by 51–60 years (23.7%), 71–80 years (16.25%), 41–50 years (11%), and 31–40 years (10%), and the age group of 20–30 years had the lowest rate (1.20%). In a study of 80 subjects prescription, smoking history was found in 66.25 % of men and 2.5% of women. Comorbidities affect 71.25% of people, while the percentage of people who do not have comorbidities is 28.7%. A total of 619 medicines were prescribed in the 80 prescriptions. Bronchodilators (36.1%) were the most commonly given classes of medications, followed by antibiotics (25.8%), corticosteroids (18.7%). Leukotriene antagonists were the least commonly prescribed medication class (0.80%). Utilizing the WHO's core Conclusion: prescribing indicators for this COPD patients will strengthen the current hospital prescribing policies Clinical Pharmacists as drug therapy managers can play an excellent role in optimizing the drug therapy regimens supporting other health care professionals.

ABSTRACT

The current study was aimed to investigate the changes in tobacco usage and their correlations among students from a private university in Dhaka, Bangladesh, during the lockdown periods due to the COVID19 pandemic. It is designed as a cross-sectional study in which 572 students participated, among which 207 were smokers, in a self-administered online survey on Google Classrooms through Google forms. The socioeconomic characteristics of the participants, COVID-19, and tobacco use-related information were collected using a close-ended questionnaire. Participating students were asked if their tobacco consumption had changed during the COVID-19 lockdowns compared to before the pandemic. Among the smokers, 31.9% stated an increase in tobacco use in the extended lockdown periods imposed by the authorities to contain coronavirus infection and the rest had no change in such behavior. Tobacco intake in the form of cigarette smoking was substantially increased among the participants who thought the lockdown period was more stressful than preCOVID times (aOR = 5.767, 95% CI: 2.5-13.26, p < 0.001), participants whose caffeine intake increased (aOR = 3.524, 95% CI: 1.70-7.29, p < 0.002), participants who attended any social events during lockdowns (aOR = 2.720, 95% CI: 1.26-5.86, p p<0.012) and those who reported it was dif?cult to procure cigarettes during the lockdown periods (aOR = 2.932, 95% CI: 1.36- 6.32, p < 0.007). This study explored that stressful condition due to extended lockdowns, higher caffeine intake, and dif?culty in getting cigarettes were signi?cant elements for increased tobacco use among the selected students.

Objetivo: Analisar a relação entre casos e óbitos por COVID-19 e o percentual de tabagistas nas capitais e regiões do Brasil. Métodos: Realizou-se estudo ecológico nas regiões brasileiras do número de casos e óbitos por COVID-19, de março a dezembro de 2020, e a prevalência de tabagismo em 2019, a partir dos bancos de dados do Painel Coronavírus da Secretaria de Vigilância em Saúde e do Sistema de Vigilância de Fatores de Risco e Proteção para Doenças Crônicas por Inquérito Telefônico (VIGITEL ­ 2019). Com informações extraídas em janeiro de 2021, calcularam-se os coeficientes de incidência e mortalidade por COVID-19 por capital brasileira e região, bem como se utilizou a correlação de Pearson para verificar a relação entre as variáveis do estudo. Adotou-se nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Análises bivariadas mostraram correlações positivas entre tabagistas do sexo feminino e coeficiente de incidência de COVID-19 nas capitais da região do Centro-Oeste (r=0,957; p=0,043), e entre fumantes do sexo masculino e coeficiente de mortalidade de COVID-19 nas capitais do Nordeste (r=0,706; p=0,034). Conclusão: O tabagismo teve impacto na incidência de casos e óbitos por COVID-19 em diversas capitais brasileiras, alertando que o fumo pode ser fator de predisposição e agravamento do estado clínico dos pacientes.


Objective: To analyze the relationship between COVID-19 cases and deaths and the percentage of smokers in the capitals and regions of Brazil. Methods: An ecological study was carried out in the Brazilian regions to assess the number of cases and deaths by COVID-19 from March to December 2020 and the prevalence of smoking in 2019 based on the Coronavirus Panel databases of the Health Surveillance Secretariat and the System for Surveillance of Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone-based Survey (Vigilância de Fatores de Risco e Proteção para Doenças Crônicas por Inquérito Telefônico - VIGITEL ­ 2019). With information extracted in January 2021, the COVID-19 incidence and mortality coefficients were calculated by Brazilian capital and region and Pearson's correlation was used to verify the relationship between the study variables. A significance level of 5% was adopted. Results: Bivariate analyses showed positive correlations between female smokers and COVID-19 incidence coefficient in capitals of the Midwest region (r=0.957; p=0.043), and between male smokers and COVID-19 mortality coefficient in the capitals of the Northeast (r=0.706; p=0.034). Conclusion: Smoking had an impact on the incidence of COVID-19 cases and deaths in several Brazilian capitals, which warns that smoking can be a predisposing factor and worsen the clinical status of patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of abnormal lung ventilation function in asymptomatic subjects receiving healthy examination and the risk factors of small airway dysfunction (SAD).Methods:From August 2016 to October 2017, the pulmonary function test results of 610 healthy subjects who met the standards of this study in Fuxing Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University were analyzed. The detection rate of abnormal lung function was described; the difference of lung function was compared between smokers and non-smokers, among groups with different smoking age, between individuals with normal body mass index and obese individuals; the risk factors of SAD was investigated; and the characteristics of abnormal lung function in asymptomatic subjects receiving physical examinations were summarized.Results:Among the 610 subjects, the overall prevalence of abnormal pulmonary function was 42.6%, and the rate of obstructive, restrictive, mixed and pure SAD were 16.7% and 5.9%, 2.5% and 17.5% respectively. The prevalence of the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV 1) to forced vital capacity (FVC) (FEV 1/FVC) less than 70% was 4.6%; small airway function indicators of maximal mid expiratory flow (MMEF), forced expiratory flow at 50% and 75% of forced vital capacity (FEF 50% and FEF 75%) for smokers were significantly lower than that of non-smokers, and decreased progressively with smoking age. Smoking was an independent risk factor for SAD. Compared with non-smokers, smokers had a 65-fold increase in the risk of SAD. Obesity was not associated with SAD. Conclusions:The prevalence of abnormal lung function is high in asymptomatic subjects receiving healthy examination. The main abnormalities are obstructive ventilation dysfunction and SAD. Cigarette smoking is the major risk factor for SAD.

ABSTRACT

Background: Tobacco smoking is a source of many toxins such as free radicals, mutagenic substances as well as cause for developing cardiovascular diseases (CVD), particularly atherosclerosis. This study aims to assess the impact of smoking on antioxidants in Sudanese male smokers. Methods: Cases were 85 and 48 men who smoke cigarettes (CS) and water pipe (WPS) respectively and they were compared with matching 50 non-smoking controls. Blood samples were collected and following parameters: Glutathione peroxidase, Superoxide dismutase, Total cholesterol, Triglyceride, LDL, HDL, Paraoxinase, and Malondialdehyde were measured. Results: There were no significant differences in biochemical parameters between light CS and WPS compared to controls. In heavy smokers of both WPS and CS, the TC, TG, LDL, and MDA were higher than controls (p>0.05), GPx, SOD, HDL, and PON were lower in smokers than controls (p>0.05). In both groups of smokers, HDL, GPx, SOD, and PON were inversely correlated with duration of smoking (p>0.05), also, HDL was positively correlated with SOD and GPx (p>0.05). Moreover, GPx and SOD were correlated with each other in both groups of smokers (p>0.05). Conclusion: In Sudanese male smokers' biochemical profile disturbances suggest that heavy smoking was leading to developing CVD, particularly WPS

ABSTRACT Objective. To assess the characteristics, self-reported tobacco use, knowledge, and perceptions about smoking cessation among cancer care providers (CCPs), as well as perceived barriers to inform interventions that can potentially improve quitting rates and the prognosis of cancer patients in Latin America. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 996 CCPs in six cancer institutions located in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. An online survey consisting of 28 close-ended questions adapted from the 2012 International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer survey and the Global Adult Tobacco Survey was administered. Results. The majority of CCPs, ranging from 86.1% in Mexico to 95.9% in Brazil, agreed or strongly agreed that smoking cessation should be integrated into cancer treatment. However, inadequate training on smoking cessation was reported by 66.9%, 69.4%, 70.4%, 72.9%, 85.8%, and 86.4% in Mexico, Colombia (Floridablanca), Argentina, Peru, Brazil, and Colombia (Medellín), respectively, and this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Moreover, current cigarette smoking prevalence among CCPs was 2.5% in Brazil, 4.6% in Peru, 6.3% in Colombia (Floridablanca), 10.4% in Colombia (Medellín), 11.5% in Mexico, and 15.1% in Argentina, showing a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). Conclusions. Efforts in Latin America should be geared toward assisting CCPs with their quitting efforts and training in smoking cessation practices aimed at achieving a better prognosis and improving cancer patients' quality of life.


RESUMEN Objetivo. Evaluar entre los prestadores de atención a pacientes con cáncer las características, el consumo de tabaco referido por la misma persona, sus conocimientos y sus impresiones acerca de dejar de fumar, así como los obstáculos percibidos, para sustentar las intervenciones que puedan mejorar las tasas de abandono del consumo y el pronóstico de los pacientes con cáncer en América Latina. Métodos. Se realizó un estudio transversal con 996 prestadores de atención oncológica en seis instituciones oncológicas ubicadas en Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, México y Perú. Se realizó una encuesta en línea con 28 preguntas cerradas adaptadas de la encuesta de la Asociación Internacional para el Estudio del Cáncer de Pulmón del 2012 y la Encuesta Mundial de Tabaquismo en Adultos. Resultados. La mayoría de los prestadores de atención oncológica, del 86,1% en México al 95,9% en Brasil, estuvieron de acuerdo o muy de acuerdo con que el abandono del tabaco debería integrarse en el tratamiento del cáncer. Sin embargo, 66,9%, 69,4%, 70,4%, 72,9%, 85,8% y 86,4% en México, Colombia (Floridablanca), Argentina, Perú, Brasil y Colombia (Medellín), respectivamente, dieron parte de una formación inadecuada en cuanto al abandono del tabaco, y esta diferencia fue estadísticamente significativa (p < 0,001). Además, la prevalencia actual del consumo de tabaco entre los proveedores de atención oncológica fue de 2,5% en Brasil, 4,6% en Perú, 6,3% en Colombia (Floridablanca), 10,4 % en Colombia (Medellín), 11,5% en México y 15,1% en Argentina, y mostró una diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p < 0,001). Conclusiones. En América Latina, deben canalizarse los esfuerzos para ayudar a los prestadores de atención oncológica a abandonar el consumo de tabaco y apoyarlos en la capacitación acerca de las prácticas de abandono del tabaco dirigidas a lograr un pronóstico más favorable y mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes con cáncer.

Avaliar as características, o uso autorrelatado de tabaco, o conhecimento e as percepções sobre o abandono do tabagismo entre os profissionais da área de oncologia (PAO), bem como as barreiras percebidas, a fim de guiar intervenções que possam melhorar as taxas de abandono e o prognóstico de pacientes com câncer na América Latina. Métodos. Realizou-se um estudo transversal com 996 PAO em seis instituições de oncologia localizadas na Argentina, no Brasil, na Colômbia, no México e no Peru. Administrou-se uma pesquisa on-line com 28 perguntas fechadas, adaptadas do levantamento realizado em 2012 pela Associação Internacional para o Estudo do Câncer de Pulmão e do Global Adult Tobacco Survey (Levantamento Global do Tabagismo em Adultos). Resultados. A maioria dos PAO, variando de 86,1% (no México) a 95,9% (no Brasil), concordou parcial ou totalmente com a necessidade de integrar o abandono do tabagismo ao tratamento do câncer. Entretanto, o treinamento inadequado sobre o abandono do tabagismo foi relatado por 66,9% no México, 69,4% na Colômbia (Floridablanca), 70,4% na Argentina, 72,9% no Peru, 85,8% no Brasil e 86,4% na Colômbia (Medellín), e essa diferença foi estatisticamente significante (p < 0,001). Além disso, a prevalência atual de consumo de cigarro entre os PAO foi de 2,5% no Brasil, 4,6% no Peru, 6,3% na Colômbia (Floridablanca), 10,4% na Colômbia (Medellín), 11,5% no México, e 15,1% na Argentina, mostrando uma diferença estatisticamente significante (p < 0,001). Conclusões. Os esforços na América Latina devem ser direcionados para o auxílio aos PAO em seus esforços de abandonar o tabagismo e para o treinamento sobre métodos para abandono do tabagismo, com o objetivo de melhorar o prognóstico e a qualidade de vida dos pacientes com câncer.

Abstract The present study aims to investigate the impacts of cigarette smoking (CS) and water-pipe smoking (WPS) on the visceral adiposity index (VAI), hematological characteristics, and glycemic tolerance in Iraqi healthy smokers. A total of 528 healthy males from different locations of Baghdad city were allocated to three groups; nonsmokers (176), cigarette smokers (178), and WP smokers (174). Baseline characteristics, anthropometric and hematological markers and were reported. Glycemic control was evaluated using the glucose tolerance test. The evidence of elevated VAI, disrupted hematological markers, and impaired glucose tolerance was significantly (P<0.001) different compared with non-smokers and related to the duration of smoking. The impacts of WPS seem to be significantly greater than CS in certain parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit, methemoglobin, and 2-hour glucose tolerance values). In conclusion, CS and WPS negatively impacted body fat distribution, glucose tolerance, and hematological markers. There is a positive association between the rate of smoking and obesity, glycemic intolerance in both groups

Objective: Smoking is among the most destructive habits which have numerous effects on the body.The chemical components of cigarettes destroy the anti-oxidant content of the saliva.In this study, the concentration of albumin and uric acid of healthy non-smokers and smokers was measured based on the frequency of smoking. Material and Methods:In this cross-sectional study, 26 heavy smokers, 27 normal smokers, and 29 non-smokers between the ages of 25 to 40 were selected.The subjects did not suffer from any systemic or periodontal conditions.Unstimulated saliva was collected by spitting. The level of salivary albumin was measured by Bromocresol Green, and the level of salivary uric acid was measured by the uricase method.The selected method of analysis, using SPSS software, was One-Way ANOVA. Results: Mean albumin content of saliva was 33.52 ± 1.52 mg/dl in non-smokers and 23.88 ± 8.93 mg/dl in heavy smokers.The mean uric acid concentration in non-smokers was 2.98 ± 0.79 µmol/L and in heavy smokers was 2.32 ± 0.77 mg/dL.The differences between levels of both salivary uric acid and salivary albumin were significant in heavy smokers and non-smokers(P=0.001). Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, saliva concentrations of both Albumin and Uric Acid change based on the frequency of smoking.Decreased level of salivary albumin and decreased level of salivary uric acid can be considered as markers of the harmful effects of smoking on oral health. Objetivo: Tabagismo está entre os hábitos mais deletérios, que causam inúmeros efeitos no organismo. Os componentes químicos do cigarro destroem os compostos anti-oxidantes da saliva. Neste estudo, a concentração de albumina e ácido úrico em pacientes saudáveis fumantes e não-fumantes foi mensurada e correlacionada coma frequência de fumo. Material e Métodos: Neste estudo transversal, 26 fumantes pesados, 27 fumantes moderados, e 29 não fumantes entre 25 e 40 anos foram incluídos. Os participantes não apresentavam nenhuma condição sistêmica ou periodontal. Saliva não estimulada foi coletada. Os níveis salivares de albumina foram avaliados por Verde de bromocresol, e o nível de ácido úrico foi mensurado pelo método de uricase. Os dados foram analisados utilizando-se One-way ANOVA no software SPSS. Resultados: A albumina salivar foi de 33.52 ±1.52 mg/dl nos não-fumantes e 23.88 ± 8.93 mg/dl nos fumantes pesados. A concentração média de ácido úrico em não-fumantes foi de 2.98 ± 0.79 µmol/L e em pacientes fumantes pesados de 2.32 ± 0.77 mg/dL. As diferenças entre os níveis de ambos, ácido úrico e albumina, foi significante entre fumantes pesados e não-fumantes (p=0.001). Conclusão: Baseados nos achados deste estudo, concentrações salivares de albumina e ácido úrico baseados na frequência de fumo. A diminuição dos níveis salivares de albumina e ácido úrico podem ser considerados marcadores dos efeitos nocivos do cigarro na saúde oral(AU)

Abstract: This study evaluated the influence of Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) on the consumption of alcohol and cigarette use in adolescents. This prospective cohort began in 2012 (T1) with an initial random sample of 1134 12-year-old adolescents followed for 6 years in Santa Maria, southern Brazil. The present study comprised data from the two cohort reassessments that took place in 2014 (T2) and 2018 (T3). OHRQoL was measured with the Brazilian short version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14) at T2. Socioeconomic, demographic, and oral health measures were also collected during this period. Alcohol and cigarette consumption (regular use) in the past 30 days was evaluated at T3 through questions in the of the National School Health Survey (PeNSE) questionnaire. A multilevel Poisson regression model was used to evaluate the influence of predictor variables on substance use. Of the 770 adolescents at T2, 575 and 576 adolescents were reassessed at T3 for alcohol and cigarette consumption, respectively. Adolescents with higher overall CPQ11-14 scores were at higher risk for regular consumption of alcohol (IRR 1.01; 95% CI 1.01-1.02) and cigarette (IRR 1.04; 95% CI 1.03-1.05). Non-white adolescents with low socioeconomic status, untreated dental caries, and who had not been to the dentist (last 6 months) were also associated with increased regular consumption of licit substances. Adolescents with worse OHRQoL presented a higher consumption of alcohol and cigarette. These findings are useful for planning public health strategies to improve adolescent OHRQoL and reduce the harmful substance use.

RESUMEN Objetivos. Evaluar cómo y en qué medida se produce un intercambio desde los cigarrillos convencionales (CC) a los sistemas electrónicos de administración de nicotina (SEAN). Materiales y métodos. Se realizó una revisión sistemática hasta agosto de 2019. El desenlace primario fue la proporción de un intercambio completo o parcial de CC a los SEAN y sus aspectos económicos. Los desenlaces secundarios como medidas de resultado fueron la probabilidad de intercambio y la tendencia en el intercambio por países. Resultados. Se encontraron 3628 referencias y se incluyeron 49 estudios con datos epidemiológicos y económicos. Los estudios económicos sobre la elasticidad cruzada de precios mostraron que los CC son parcialmente intercambiables por SEAN. La mayoría de los estudios reportaron que la prevalencia del consumo de cigarrillos electrónicos se incrementó con el tiempo. Tres estudios reportaron una reducción significativa de los CC consumidos por día entre fumadores duales (convencionales más SEAN) en comparación con los consumidores de CC. El odds ratio ajustado y combinado de dejar los CC entre consumidores de SEAN en comparación con quienes nunca consumieron o lo hicieron en el pasado fue de 1,19 (IC95%: 1,09-1,30; heterogeneidad 0%). Los estudios longitudinales mostraron una creciente prevalencia del uso de cigarrillos electrónicos, principalmente en adolescentes. Se encontró una relación negativa entre el consumo y aumento de precio de CC y electrónicos. Conclusión. La probabilidad de dejar de fumar CC entre consumidores habituales de SEAN se incrementó respecto a los consumidores que nunca o que solían consumir SEAN. Estudios económicos reportaron que los cigarrillos electrónicos son parcialmente intercambiables por los CC.


ABSTRACT Objectives. To assess how and in what extent the electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use substituted the consumption of traditional combustible cigarettes (c-cigarettes, c-cig). Materials and Methods. We performed a systematic review of the literature up to August 2019 in scientific databases. Primary outcomes were proportion of complete or partial substitution of conventional to electronic cigarettes and related economic aspects. Secondary outcomes were odds ratio of substitution and country-wise time trends. Results. We retrieved 3,628 references and included 49 studies, providing economic and epidemiological data. Economic studies of cross-price elasticity showed that combustible cigarettes are partially substitutable for electronic cigarettes. Most studies reported that electronic cigarettes consumption prevalence increased over time. Three studies reported a significant reduction of combustible cigarettes consumed per day among dual users (combustible- plus electronic- cigarettes users) versus combustible-cigarettes users. The pooled adjusted odds ratio of quitting combustible cigarettes among electronic cigarettes users versus never or past electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, e-cig) users was 1.19 (95% confidence interval 1.09 to 1.30; heterogeneity score 0%). Longitudinal studies showed globally a growing prevalence of electronic cigarettes use, mainly in adolescents. A negative relationship between consumption and price increase of electronic and combustible cigarettes was found. Conclusion. The chance of quitting smoking combustible cigarettes among current electronic nicotine delivery systems users was increased with respect to never- or past- electronic nicotine delivery systems users. Economic studies reported that electronic cigarette is partially substitutable for combustible cigarettes.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCCIÓN. Los cambios de color en los dientes acrílicos dependen de varios factores, con el humo de cigarrillo como uno de los principales agentes de igmentación de las prótesis. OBJETIVO. Valorar el grado de pigmentación en dientes acrílicos sometidos al humo del cigarrillo, mediante espectrofotometría digital. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS. Estudio observacional, analítico, de caso y control. Muestra de 60 dientes acrílicos divididos en dos grupos: A (resina acrílica de 3 capas) y B (resina acrílica de 4 capas). Se subdividió en: grupo 1: dientes sometidos a humo de cigarrillo estándar con filtro de carbón; grupo 2: dientes sometidos a humo de cigarrillo estándar sin filtro; y, grupo 3: grupo control. Cada uno de éstos se expuso a 150 cigarrillos, 5 diarios durante 30 días y el grupo control fue mantenido a 37ºC en saliva artificial durante 30 días sin aplicación de humo de cigarrillo. Para la toma de color se empleó espectrofotómetro Vita Easyshade®. Los análisis se realizaron en el programa estadístico International Business Machines Statistical Package for the Social Sciences mediante la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis y comparaciones de Dunn. RESULTADOS. Se determinó que la pigmentación del grupo B fue mayor a la del grupo A, con una diferencia significativa entre ellos (p< 0,05). No se encontró datos estadísticamente significativos entre cigarrillos (con filtro - sin filtro). CONCLUSIÓN. La exposición al humo de cigarrillo pigmentó los dientes acrílicos de ambas propiedades siendo mayor en los dientes de resina acrílica de 4 capas.


INTRODUCTION. Color changes in acrylic teeth depend on several factors, with cigarette smoke as one of the main agents of denture pigmentation. OBJECTIVE. To assess the degree of pigmentation in acrylic teeth subjected to cigarette smoke, using digital spectrophotometry. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Observational, analytical, case-control study. Sample of 60 acrylic teeth divided into two groups: A (3-layer acrylic resin) and B (4-layer acrylic resin). It was subdivided into: group 1: teeth subjected to standard cigarette smoke with charcoal filter; group 2: teeth subjected to standard cigarette smoke without filter; and, group 3: control group. Each of these was exposed to 150 cigarettes, 5 daily for 30 days and the control group was maintained at 37ºC in artificial saliva for 30 days without application of cigarette smoke. Vita Easyshade® spectrophotometer was used for color determination. The analyses were performed in the statistical program International Business Machines Statistical Package for the Social Sciences using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's comparisons. RESULTS. It was determined that the pigmentation of group B was greater than that of group A, with a significant difference between them (p< 0,05). No statistically significant data was found between cigarettes (filtered - unfiltered). CONCLUSION. Cigarette smoke exposure pigmented acrylic teeth of both properties being higher in 4-layer acrylic resin teeth.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCCIÓN: El tabaquismo continúa siendo un problema sanitario en población universitaria y profesionales de la salud. Los kinesiólogos participan en la implementación de programas orientados a la prevención y cese del tabaquismo en la comunidad. El objetivo de este estudio fue explorar la prevalencia de tabaquismo y actitudes sobre consumo de tabaco en estudiantes de kinesiología. MÉTODOS: Estudio de corte transversal realizado en estudiantes de Kinesiología de Concepción (Chile), durante los años 2017 y 2018. Se determinó la conducta y actitudes sobre tabaquismo. Mediante regresión logística se determinó la asociación entre la conducta fumadora y las actitudes sobre tabaquismo. Se consideró un valor de p < 0,05 como estadísticamente significativo. RESULTADOS: Se contestaron 554 cuestionarios. El 57,8% de los estudiantes encuestados declaró no haber fumado nunca, 13 % no haber fumado los últimos 6 meses y 29,4% declaró ser fumador actual. Por su parte, el 99,5% expresó algún grado de acuerdo con que fumar es perjudicial para la salud, lo cual se relacionó con la conducta fumadora (p < 0,0002). En relación a actitudes sobre tabaquismo, comparado a los no fumadores, los fumadores actuales presentan mayor probabilidad de mostrar desacuerdo o indiferencia respecto a actitudes positivas sobre tabaquismo. Principalmente en aquellas acciones que restringen su consumo, venta y divulgación (OR ponderado = 2,43; 95%IC 2,02 - 2,92). CONCLUSIONES: La prevalencia de tabaquismo en estudiantes de Kinesiología de Concepción es del 29,2%. Los estudiantes fumadores expresan una menor aprobación relacionada a intervenciones, actitudes y consecuencias del tabaquismo para la salud comparada con los no fumadores.


INTRODUCTION: Notwithstanding control policies, smoking continues to be a health problem in university students and health professionals, who are responsible for implementing programs oriented to prevention and cessation of smoking in the community. The objective of this study was to explore the prevalence of smoking and attitudes about smoking in physical therapy students. METHODS: Cross-sectional study carried out in students of physical therapy from three universities of Concepción city (Chile), during the years 2017 and 2018. Behavior and attitudes about smoking were evaluated. Association between smoking behavior and attitudes about smoking was determined by logistic regression. A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: 554 questionnaires were answered. 57.8% of respondents had never smoked, 13.0% had not smoked in the last 6 months and 29.4% were current smokers. Moreover 99.5% of respondents stated some degree of agreement that smoking is harmful to health, which was related to smoking behavior (p < 0.0002). In relation to attitudes about smoking, compared to non-smokers, current smokers have a greater chance of showing disagreement or indifference regarding positive attitudes about smoking. Mainly in those actions that restrict tobacco consumption, sale and disclosure (weighted OR = 2.43, 95% CI 2.02 - 2.92). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of current smoking in physical therapy students from Concepcion city is 29.2%. Smoking students express lower approval related to interventions, attitudes and consequences of smoking for health compared with non-smokers.

BACKGROUND@#This systematic and meta-analysis review aimed to provide an updated estimate of the prevalence of ever and current cigarette smoking in women, in geographic areas worldwide, and demonstrate a trend of the prevalence of smoking over time by using a cumulative meta-analysis.@*METHODS@#Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published on the prevalence of ever and current cigarette smoking in women. We searched PubMed, Web of Science (ISI), Scopus, and Ovid from January 2010 to April 2020. The reference lists of the studies included in this review were also screened. Data were reviewed and extracted independently by two authors. A random effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of ever and current cigarette smoking in women. Sources of heterogeneity among the studies were determined using subgroup analysis and meta-regression.@*RESULTS@#The pooled prevalence of ever and current cigarette smoking in women was 28% and 17%, respectively. The pooled prevalence of ever cigarette smoking in adolescent girls/students of the school, adult women, pregnant women, and women with the disease was 23%, 27%, 32%, and 38%, respectively. The pooled prevalence of ever cigarette smoking in the continents of Oceania, Asia, Europe, America, and Africa was 36%, 14%, 38%, 31%, and 32%, respectively.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The prevalence of cigarette smoking among women is very high, which is significant in all subgroups of adolescents, adults, and pregnant women. Therefore, it is necessary to design and implement appropriate educational programs for them, especially in schools, to reduce the side effects and prevalence of smoking among women.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Smoking has been shown to alter innate and adaptive immune responses and is directly associated with the onset of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke exposure on dendritic cells (DCs) from OSCC patients. CD1a and CD83 antibodies were used to identify immature and mature DCs, respectively, by immunohistochemistry in OSCC samples of 24 smokers and 24 non-smokers. Density of DCs was calculated in intra and peritumoral areas. Clinical and microscopic findings were reviewed and analyzed for all patients. Smokers with OSCC had a lower density of intra and peritumoral DCs when compared to non-smokers. Tumors classified as moderately/poorly differentiated had lower peritumoral CD1a+ DCs than well-differentiated tumors (p < 0.001). Smoking contributed to a depletion of immature and mature DCs in the OSCC.
